Readme file for Seiko Instruments USA Inc. InkNote Manager software, version 3.2 with support for the InkLink Handwriting System and SmartPad Notepads. September 30, 2002 Please take a moment to register during the software installation process. Registration entitles you to product support and special benefits not available elsewhere, such as: * Free technical support * First notification on new product announcements * Discounts and special product offers During setup, you might be asked for your product hardware serial number. This number is located on the right side of the SmartPad portfolio, under the paper tablet and on the bottom of the InkLink Data Clip. The serial number includes all the characters after "Serial No:" or "S/N:" If you are upgrading your hardware or software and downloaded this application, you might be asked for a software purchase code during installation. If you do not have a software purchase code, go to http://www.siibusinessproducts.com/support/ and purchase one in order to complete the installation process. Incorrectly entering your hardware serial number will result in the installer requesting a software purchase code in order to complete the registration process. SYSTEM REQUIREMENTS * Desktop or laptop computer with one of the following Microsoft operating systems: o Windows 95 o Windows 98 o Windows 98SE o Windows Me o Windows NT Workstation 4.0 with SP6 or later o Windows 2000 o Windows XP * PC Minimum Hardware Requirements: o Pentium or better processor o 32 MB RAM o CD-ROM drive o USB or serial port available * Handheld Minimum System Requirements: o Windows CE v3.0 (Pocket PC 2000) or later or Palm OS 3.1 or later o 1.0 MB available memory * For Pocket PC handhelds ActiveSync 3.1 or later (version 3.5 recommended) ActiveSync comes with a Pocket PC; you can download the latest version from Microsoft at http://www.microsoft.com/mobile/downloads/ * For Palm OS handhelds HotSync Manager version 3.0.1 or later. HotSync Manager comes with your Palm OS handheld. Contact your handheld vendor for information and updates. INSTALLATION REQUIREMENTS For Pocket PC Handhelds: Microsoft ActiveSync must be installed prior to installing this software. InkNote Manager syncs information on the two computers by having ActiveSync move the files back and forth. To confirm that ActiveSync is installed and running properly, do either of the following: * On the desktop/laptop computer, open the Start menu and choose Programs, Microsoft ActiveSync. Connect the Pocket PC and computer (via cable or IR connection) and be sure that the display shows that the devices are "Connected" and "Synchronized." Be sure that Files is "checked" for synchronization. * On the Pocket PC, open the Start menu and choose Programs, Connections. Connect the Pocket PC and computer (via cable or IR connection), tap ActiveSync, and be sure the display shows that the devices are "Connected, up-to-date." If ActiveSync is not installed on both computers (or you can't get the devices to synchronize), cancel the InkNote Manager installation and resolve the ActiveSync problem before proceeding. IMPORTANT: YOU MUST CONFIGURE ACTIVESYNC TO SYNC FILES. To be sure ActiveSync is properly configured, on the desktop computer, open ActiveSync. Open the Tools menu and choose Options. On the Sync Options tab, ensure that Files is checked. For Palm OS Handhelds: HotSync Manager must be installed prior to installing this software. InkNote Manager syncs information on the two computers by having HotSync Manager move the files back and forth when you perform a synchronization. If HotSync Manager is not installed on both computers (or you can't get the devices to synchronize), cancel the InkNote Manager installation and resolve the HotSync problem before proceeding. CONFIGURING AND TESTING YOUR HARDWARE After you complete the software installation, you should configure and test the hardware, as follows: 1. Configure the Seiko Instruments USA Inc. hardware: SmartPad: Install batteries in the SmartPad portfolio and the SmartPad pen. Install your handheld in the SmartPad portfolio. For details, consult the on-line User's Guide. (On the desktop computer, choose Start, Programs, InkNote Manager, Read User Guide.) InkLink: Install batteries in the InkLink IrDA Transceiver and the InkLink pen. Attach the InkLink IrDA transceiver in front of the IrDA port on your handheld. Connect the IrDA Transceiver cable to the InkLink Data Clip and attach the Data Clip to the top of your paper at the left edge. For details, consult the on-line User's Guide. (On the desktop computer, choose Start, Programs, InkNote Manager, Read User Guide.) 2. On your handheld, open InkNote Manager. The first time you start InkNote Manager, the select pen hardware screen will appear. Tap the selection for your hardware, either InkLink of SmartPad, and then tap OK to proceed. 3. Start writing; your notes appear on the screen. TROUBLESHOOTING INKLINK Work down this list until the solution is found. 1. Be sure the handheld is turned on and that InkNote Manager is running. 2. Check that there is a blinking red light inside the left receiver on the data clip. If not, replace the battery in the IrDA transceiver. 3. Check that the blink rate increases when the pen is depressed on the paper. If not, replace the pen batteries. 4. Make sure the transceiver is aligned with the handheld's infrared port. 5. Press the pen down on the paper for 5 seconds. 6. In InkNote Manager, tap a menu and then tap elsewhere to close the menu. 7. In InkNote Manager Explorer, on the Setup menu, choose Tablet Properties. Ensure that Tablet Active is checked. 8. In InkNote Manager Explorer, on the Setup menu, choose Test Tablet. Use the pen to write on the pad and see if information appears on the screen. 9. In InkNote Manager Explorer, open the Setup menu and choose Select pen hardware. Be sure that InkLink is selected. 10. Switch to another program and then switch back to InkNote Manager. (This causes it to reopen the port.) 11. Reset the handheld. TROUBLESHOOTING SMARTPAD Work down this list until the solution is found. 1. Be sure the handheld is turned on and that InkNote Manager is running. 2. Make sure the transceiver is aligned with the handheld's infrared port. 3. Press the pen down on the paper for 5 seconds. 4. In InkNote Manager, tap a menu and then tap elsewhere to close the menu. 5. In InkNote Manager Explorer, on the Setup menu, choose Tablet Properties. Ensure that Tablet Active is checked. 6. In InkNote Manager Explorer, on the Setup menu, choose Test Tablet. Use the pen to write on the pad and see if information appears on the screen. 7. In InkNote Manager Explorer, open the Setup menu and choose Select pen hardware. Be sure that SmartPad is selected. 8. Switch to another program and then switch back to InkNote Manager. (This causes it to reopen the port.) 9. Reset the handheld. ADDITIONAL CHECKS FOR POCKET PC HANDHELDS 1. Open the Setup menu and choose Tablet Properties. Select the appropriate port for your PocketPC: o Compaq iPAQ - COM2 o HP Jornada - COM4 o Casio E200 - COM4 o Toshiba E570 - COM2 o Toshiba E740 - COM2 2. On some Pocket PC 2002 models it might be necessary to do the following: o Open the Start menu and tap Settings. o Tap the Connections tab and then tap the Beam icon. o Remove the check from the Receiving check box. This allows your device to access the infrared port. 3. For SmartPad and Compaq iPAQ 3900 Series owners. Compaq iPAQ 3900 Series (3950, 3955, 3970 and 3975) with ROM version 1.0 and 2.0 have an IR communication problem that prevents correct IR communications with other devices, including SmartPad and InkNote Manager software. The 3900 series requires the installation of a driver update that fixes the infrared communication problems. This file update can be downloaded from Compaq at the following site: http://www.compaq.com/support/files/handheldiPAQ/us/download/15800.html Follow the installation instructions. In addition, you must be using InkNote Manager version 3.2 or above. CONNECTING INKLINK DIRECTLY TO YOUR DESKTOP You can connect InkLink directly to your desktop computer with the USB cable that is included with InkLink. If you don't have a USB port, there is an optional serial cable available from www.siibusinessproducts.com. 1. Open the Setup menu and choose Tablet Properties. Select the port your InkLink cable is connected to. VIEWING THE DOCUMENTATION The User's Guide is an Adobe Acrobat PDF document that contains detailed information about the product. To view the User's Guide on your desktop computer, do either of the following: * Open the Start menu and choose Programs, Seiko Instruments USA Inc. InkNote Manager, View User Guide. * Display the CD-ROM in Windows Explorer. Double-click the User's Guide.pdf icon. To view the User's Guide, you must have Adobe Acrobat Reader installed on your computer. You can install it from the CD, or you can download it from www.adobe.com. Performance Exceptions: * On a HP Jornada running Pocket PC 2002, the screen might go blank when writing a note. To prevent this from happening, do the following: o Open the Start menu and tap Settings. o Tap the System tab and then tap HP Settings, Power Preferences. o Remove the check from the "Turn off the display when system cannot auto-suspend..." box. * On some Pocket PC 2002 models, you may receive a "Cannot open the port" error message upon first running InkNote Manager in InkLink. To fix the problem, do the following: o Open the Start menu and tap Settings. o Tap the Connections tab and then tap the Beam icon. o Remove the check from the Receiving check box. This allows InkLink to access the infrared port. * Sometimes after "beaming," InkNote Manager might not automatically regain control of your Pocket PC's infrared port. To fix the problem, do the following: * Tap OK twice to close any onscreen messages. * In InkNote Manager, open the File menu and choose Exit. Then restart InkNote Manager.
