Printing Error message: A Fatal Exception 0E has occurred at 0028:C007DBD2 in VXD mrtRate(01) + 0000156A

When you install Intuit’s QuickBooks 2000 (Release 1 or 2), or Quicken 2000, the mrtrate.vxd file is installed, which may cause a conflict with the SLP. Attempting to print from the SLP will result in the error message.

To resolve this issue:
1. Download and install the update file, qbmrtfix.exe, to your desktop or a temporary directory.
2. The qbmrtfix.exe file is available for download from the Intuit web site. Click here to download.
3. Close any virus-protection software that is currently running.
4. Double-click the downloaded file (qbmrtfix.exe) to install the update.
5. After the installation completes, restart your computer.

Printer Paper Feed Error

There is a sensor that looks for a hole between each label. If the sensor is obstructed (usually by a piece of label) or not working, the printer can no longer locate the beginning of the next label. This will cause the printer to feed the label too far and then indicate a "PRINTER PAPER FEED ERROR."

There are two possible solutions to the problem; one is to check the printer for obstruction to the sensor. The sensor is located just inside the slot where the labels feed into the printer.
1. With a pair of scissors, cut the label stock between the label roll and the label slot at the back of the printer.
2. Remove the print engine cover by grasping it at the top and pulling the top toward you.
3. Release the pressure on the label stock by moving the platen release lever toward the front of the printer.
4. Remove the stuck label by turning the platen knob clockwise.
5. If any adhesive residue remains on the platen, you can remove it using isopropyl alcohol.

Should this not resolve the problem or if you need assistance while cleaning the printer, please feel free to contact technical support. The second alternative is to return the printer to our repair facility for servicing.

Light Printing

If the printing on your label is light (not solid, dark black), one of the following problems may be the cause:

1. Labels have been exposed to heat, light or other elements due to improper storage. The solution is to discard the labels.
2. Print head has a built-up residue or debris, which impedes the proper transfer of heat to the label (this could be from use of improper labels, see below). The solution in this case is to clean the print head using a small amount of isopropyl alcohol on a soft cloth.
3. Use of inferior labels. Only genuine Seiko Instruments USA Inc. SmartLabels are guaranteed to give best results in your SLP. Use of improper labels can damage your printer and void your warranty.

Fading Labels

All SLPs use thermal labels for printing. By using thermal labels, the reliability of the printer is much better than printers that require ribbons or ink pads. However, there are two limitations to thermal labels:
1. First, thermal paper/labels are sensitive to UV (ultraviolet) light. UV light reacts with the thermal coating and fades the image.
2. Second, the thermal coating will react to the gas vapors released by the polyvinyl used in most plastic binders, causing the image to fade.

Labels sold by Seiko Instruments USA Inc. have been tested in a number of environments. The test results have shown that if the labels have a limited exposure to direct UV light sources the labels should last many years. Also, image fading can be significantly reduced if a vapor barrier (e.g. "Scotch" tape) is placed between the label and the plastic surface of binders.

Configuring Serial Ports on a PC

An improperly configured serial port is a common problem in PCs. Your serial port is improperly configured if:

1. Two serial ports (and/or internal modems) devices share the same COM port address
2. Your serial port and another device in the computer share the same IRQ (interrupt request)

You will need to verify and possibly reconfigure some of the settings of your serial port and other peripherals in your computer in order to resolve the problem. Consult the manufacturers of the respective hardware in your computer for more information.

Changing Label Rolls while Printing Lists

Care should be taken not to power off the printer when changing label rolls during the printing of multiple labels. Shutting off the SLP clears the printer's buffer and may result in lost labels. Also, when changing labels, it is possible that the last label on a roll may need to be reprinted.

Year 2000 Compliance

The SLP is fully Year 2000 (Y2K) compliant. Click here to view or print the Year 2000 Compliance letter.
