8. Why do I notice different results in writing accuracy when I am close to the InkLink Data Clip?
Writing accuracy results will vary a small amount when you write close to the Data Clip, especially as the amount of paper on your pad decreases. As paper is removed from your pad, the angle between the pen writing surface and the Data Clip increases. The difference is small and is less noticeable as the pen moves away from the data clip. We recommend that you keep your writing at least an inch from the Data Clip as the paper on your pad is used up.
9. What technology does the InkLink Handwriting System utilize?
The InkLink Handwriting System is using a Seiko Instruments USA Inc. exclusive development called Binaural Technology. InkLink's binaural implementation is an adaptation of ultrasonic and infrared technologies. The InkLink Electronic Pen and Data Clip communicate using ultrasonic transmission. The InkLink Data Clip continuously listens for communications from the InkLink pen while it tracks the natural movement of your hand. The InkLink Data Clip communicates with the handheld using Infrared transmission from the InkLink IrDA Transceiver.

38. Ink strokes on the paper do not appear on the screen.
Here are a series of steps that you can take to determine the cause of the problem and suggested solutions:
- Make sure that the InkLink Data Clip is attached appropriately so that your hand or other objects are not blocking the communication between the InkLink Electronic Pen tip and the Data Clip.
- Make sure that the IrDA Transceiver is attached appropriately over the IR port of your PDA and InkLink Data Clip.
- Make sure that the USB or serial cable is connected securely to your PC and the Data Clip. Check that the correct port is selected on the PC, USB or COM 1-4.
- Check batteries by selecting Setup, Test tablet.
- Check to see that the red LED is flashing on the InkLink Data Clip.
- Check paper size setup and page calibration. Select Setup, Paper Size.
- Check the Data Clip position. The default position is the top, aligned to the left edge of the paper pad.
- Test the tablet for raw data operation by selecting Setup, Test tablet.
- Check for Infrared interference. Operation of InkLink and handheld in direct sunlight is not recommended without the use of some form of shielding or shading from suns rays.
39. Why does my handheld occasionally "beep" while writing?
The occasional "beep" is a message from the InkLink system that the Data Clip is not receiving accurate data from the Electronic Pen. The causes of this could be:
- Some form of obstruction, i.e. hand, ruler, wrinkled page, is blocking the path between the Electronic Pen and the Data Clip.
- The Electronic Pen is out of range of the Data Clip. Try rotating the pen to reposition the transmitter.
40. Why am I having trouble drawing straight lines with a ruler?
The ruler could be positioned between the Data Clip and the Electronic Pen. When using a ruler to draw lines, be sure to use the ruler edge closest to the Data Clip as your reference edge for the Electronic Pen.
Try using the "Straight line" mode in InkNote Manager Editor. On the desktop or Pocket PC while in an open ink note, select Tools, Straight lines. On a Palm handheld while in an open ink note, select Tools, Writing Properties and check the Straight line mode box. See the User's Guide for instructions on how to activate the pen for Straight line mode.
41. Sometimes the ink on the paper and my computer don't always match. Why?
Here are some of the causes related to inaccurate ink line data capture:
- Low batteries in the Electronic Pen or IrDA Transceiver.
- Your hand position is blocking data transmission between the Electronic Pen and Data Clip.
- The Electronic Pen is out of range of the Data Clip.
- Excessive or bright sunlight is interfering with infrared transmission.
- An excessive temperature or humidity extreme is interfering with data transmission.
- Infrared "scatter" from other nearby devices, i.e. mice or keyboards is interfering with data transmission.
42. Why is my ink document missing data along the top edge when using "landscape" paper position?
The InkLink cannot "see" directly on either end of the Data Clip. It is recommended that you need to leave up to a 1.0" top margin on the paper for best results.
43. Sometimes when I write fast the straight line feature is activated and InkLink does not capture the correct input. What should I do?
The reason for this is that you have the straight line mode selected in your tools or writing preferences menu. When writing fast, InkLink sometimes will recognize quick pen movement as a "double click" of the electronic pen and then activate the straight line function. To prevent the straight line function from inadvertently being activated, deselect straight line mode in your tools or writing preferences menu. Activate straight line only when you intentionally want to draw a straight line.
44. Does InkLink work everywhere?
In general, as long as you are environmentally comfortable, InkLink should function to your expectations. For best results use InkLink in:
- Temperatures above freezing or below 95° F (35° C)
- Humidity situations that do not cause condensation
- Indoors or out, but not in direct sunlight or other sources of infrared signals
Using InkLink outside of these conditions may result in abnormal operation.
45. My Windows system prompts me to install the Human Interface Device driver before I can start using InkLink.
When installing InkLink for the first time your Windows system may prompt you for the installation of the HID drivers. Click here for step-by-step help with the HID drivers.
46. Why can't I HotSync the ink notes created in my Palm OS handheld with my desktop?
If you have InkNote Manager 3.0 and experience this error on a regular basis, download InkNote Manager 3.1 at http://www.siibusinessproducts.com/support/inklinksoft.html. Several Palm OS HotSync issues are improved with this version.
47. What are the major differences between InkNote Manager 3.0 and 3.1?
- InkNote Manager version 3.1 provides the multi lingual support, including:
- English
- French
- German
- Spanish
- Italian
- In Palm OS devices,
- Eliminates an occasional HotSync error where your Palm OS handheld may not properly synchronize ink notes to your desktop PC.

- Increases maximum ink note file sizes to approximately 50 KB from approximately 30 KB.
- For InkNote Manager users who own both Palm OS and Pocket PC OS handhelds, devices of both OS are now visible in the "Select Partner" menu.
48. Who should upgrade to InkNote Manager 3.1?
