FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
MINI-PRINTER PROVES USEFUL AS LABEL OUTPUT DEVICE
FOR WIDE RANGE OF HEALTH CARE APPLICATIONS
TORRANCE, Calif. - August 23, 2006 -- Seiko Instruments Smart Label Printer, which measures only 6.22"(H) x 4.61"(W) x 6.34"(D), is increasingly being integrated into health care systems to provide instant labels for a wide variety of uses. The mini-printer, which can easily be programmed to produce data entered into a freestanding or networked PC or laptop, or from other types of devices, is the output tool for a biomedical waste processing system, a robotic pharmacy system, several hearing testing units and numerous other desktop and mobile health care applications.
"As health care increasingly relies on electronic solutions and diagnostics, we've noticed a growing demand for a small, reliable printer that can be customized to the application," Dennis Cox, director of sales and marketing, Business and Home/Office Products Division, Seiko Instruments USA, said. "The Smart Label Printer is very versatile; it offers a wide range of label sizes and customers can include bar codes, fonts and any graphics they want to meet their need or government regulation."
One company using the mini-printer is BioMedical Technology Solutions, Inc. (BMTS), a leading provider of processing systems for on-site medical waste disposal.
BMTS manufactures the Demolizer II, the only cost-effective system approved for on-site treatment and disposal of both sharps and red bag waste for low to medium volume medical waste generators. Customers include doctor and dentist offices, nursing homes, veterinary clinics and other health care facilities. The Demolizer II is a compact system, about the size of a desktop copier, used to ensure safe, complete disposal of medical waste and eliminate the generator's "cradle-to-grave" liability. After treatment, the sharps and red bag waste are sterile and syringes are destroyed. The treated waste is then properly labeled and can simply be thrown away as common trash.
There are more than one million low to medium volume generators of medical waste in the United States - and millions more worldwide. As a result, stringent federal and state laws require that treated medical waste be accurately labeled prior to final disposal. Additionally, people responsible for medical waste must maintain detailed log books for up to three years. Each Demolizer II is shipped with a Smart Label Printer that produces labels documenting the operator has met all regulatory requirements for disposal of their treated medical waste.
While developing the Demolizer II, BMTS searched for months for a printer that could meet its needs. The company contacted numerous printer companies.
"We looked for a printer that would be reliable for seven years or more," said Don Cox (no relation), CEO and president, BMTS. "Seiko's people were absolutely phenomenal. Not only did the Smart Label Printer meet our needs, but Seiko helped us find a software developer who quickly wrote a software interface to our system that allowed us to print the required information on our process labels. Seiko has a great product, at a great size, and a great price."
Dennis Cox of Seiko said cooperating with BMTS was no problem at all.
"Our printer is compact, efficient and works well as a peripheral for almost any integrated system that needs a label output device," Cox explained. "And we can work with customers to tailor special labels to their needs."
The printer's labels, ranging in size up to 2 1/8 inches wide, can incorporate text, graphics and barcodes at 300 DPI resolution.
Other health care companies using the Smart Label Printer include:
- ScriptPro, which provides state-of-the-art, robotics-based management and workflow systems for pharmacies.
- PreMD Inc., which provides simple, painless and patient-friendly tests that can detect life-threatening illnesses at an early stage.
- Natus Medical Incorporated, which develops products for the detection, treatment, monitoring and tracking of common hearing disorders in newborns and children.
